Chapter Nine

“What’s the number one thing Miss Jenna Lee never talks about?”

“Herself.”

“That’s it; next question: why?”

“She absolutely likes to be in control; so, you’re going to spin this as all about her, so she’ll be in control? Seems simple, except I couldn’t do it.”

Wren nodded. “Just follow my lead.”

“You have no idea what you’re going to say, do you?”

“Nope.”

Rascal dashed ahead; when they arrived at the laundry building, Rascal, Coco, and Luna waited for them in the shade. When Rascal gave a yip, the puppies dashed toward the campground; he grinned then raced after them.

“I’ve never gotten to know a dog as well as I know Rascal; he’s amazing,” Tara said as they went inside.

Miss Jenna Lee smiled. “Coco and Luna told me they desperately had to go outside; how’s everything?”

“Everybody’s happy to get busy with the construction. I don’t know what their schedule is, but I’ll bet they beat it,” Wren said. “We did get asked a little favor though.”

“Really? Care for some coffee or cold water? Is there anything I can do to help?”

“Cold water sounds good; I’ll fetch,” Tara said.

“Maybe, I don’t know; I haven’t figured out what we can do.” Wren furrowed her brow as she waited until Tara handed out the bottles of water.

Wren moved closer to the registration desk and glanced around before she spoke quietly.

“The general contractor asked Gage if there was any way to occupy Walt tomorrow for most of the day. Evidently, Walt’s trying to stay involved, and I guess that’s fine, but the guys are worried about him wandering around while they’re operating their heavy machinery.”

“I wouldn’t mind if Walt took me to lunch, but that’s only part of the day, and who would watch the desk?”

Wren nodded, and Tara copied her as they furrowed their brows and sipped their water.

Miss Jenna Lee held up her index finger. “There’s one option: Gage taught me this whole registration system; it took us almost a week, but I finally got it. We could keep him out of the way too, if he filled in for me while Walt and I were at lunch.”

“That’s a great idea; so, where is your most favorite place for lunch?” Wren asked.

Miss Jenna Lee snorted. “That’s easy; there’s a quaint café in downtown Waco that I adore.”

“Really? What is it? Could I crash the luncheon and join you?” Tara asked. “I have a quick meeting with a client in Waco tomorrow.”

“That would be fun. What about you, Wren? Would you like to go too?”

“I really would, but I’m feeling the deadline crunch for my article. I have another email from Charlie, but I haven’t opened it yet; I honestly don’t know what to do about that annoying man. He reminds me of Nelson Decker.”

“That’s easy. Dump him,” Miss Jenna Lee said.

Wren raised her eyebrows and nodded. “You know, I think that’s a fantastic idea. I’ll finish up the article tomorrow and send him my resignation.”

Tara narrowed her eyes. “No one should have to work with someone who is unreasonable.
